Content Note
The Walter H. and Olive Ann Beech
collection extends from 1919 through 1993, and it includes correspondence,
scrapbooks, financial documentation, photographs, clippings, publications,
reports, memos, certificates and plaques. The majority of the collection concerns
the life and career of Olive Ann Beech. Of particular interest in this collection
is the scrapbook collection which contains information concerning Walter H.
Beech, Olive Ann Beech, Beech Aircraft Corporation and early aviation history.
Biography
Born on a farm near Pulaski, Tennessee, on January 30, 1891, Walter H. Beech's dreams of flight began at an early age. At the age of eleven, Walter attempted to build a glider using his mother's new bed sheet. Although the experiment was a failure it didn't deter him from his dream. His first aviation experience in a plane came when the young Beech and a friend rebuilt a wrecked Curtiss biplane, and on July 11, 1914, Beech made his first solo flight.
In 1917, when the U.S. entered World War I, Beech enlisted in the Air Corps. For three years he served as an Army pilot, flight instructor and engineer. Following the war, he began barnstorming and exhibition flying to focus attention on aviation.
Beech first came to Wichita, Kansas, in 1923 to work for the Swallow Airplane Corporation as a designer, test pilot and salesman. In order to prove the reliability of the company's products and to increase sales, Beech entered and won numerous races. In less than two years he became general manager of the company.
Beech resigned from Swallow in 1924, and started his own company Travel Air Manufacturing Company for which he was both president and general manager.
As business began to grow, Beech hired a young secretary by the name of Olive Ann Mellor. She was born on September 25, 1903 in Waverly, Kansas. Her father, a building contractor, soon moved his family to Paola, Kansas, where Olive Ann attended school. In 1917, the family moved to Wichita where Olive Ann attended the American Secretarial and Business College. At 18, she left Wichita and moved to Augusta, Kansas where she was employed as a bookkeeper and office manager for an electrical appliance and contracting firm. In 1924, Olive Ann returned to Wichita were she was hired as a secretary for Travel Air.
At Travel Air, Olive Ann learned the airplane manufacturing business from the ground up, handling the correspondence, maintaining the books, conducting the banking business and managing the office. Displaying financial and business insight, she soon was promoted to office manager and secretary to Walter Beech.
By 1929, Travel Air was the world's largest commercial aircraft manufacturer, and it looked like the aviation industry was firmly established in Wichita. Unfortunately, the stock market crash of 1929 forced hard times on the industry. Faced with dwindling sales, Walter merged his company with Curtiss-Wright Corporation, a large aviation conglomerate. He served as president of Curtiss-Wright Airplane Company and directed operation of the Wichita and St. Louis plants. He eventually became the vice-president of sales when the company was forced to close the Wichita plant.
Walter Beech and Olive Ann Mellor married in 1930, and they moved to New York so that he could carry out his Curtiss-Wright responsibilities. Two years later during the darkest days of the Depression, Walter and Olive Ann returned to Wichita to found the Beech Aircraft Company with Walter as president, and Olive Ann as secretary-treasurer.
Renting a small factory, Walter, Olive Ann and a small group of employees set out to build the first Beechcraft plane. The first Beechcraft was the classic Model 17 single-engine Staggerwing biplane. The Staggerwing continued in production through 1948 and was produced in 20 commercial and military versions. In 1934 in order to handle the growing production, the company was moved to the old Travel Air facilities on East Central which became Beechcraft's permanent home.
During her years as secretary-treasurer, Olive Ann was particularly close to the financial side of the company and played a key role in major company decisions. She convinced Walter that winning a 1936 Bendix coast-to-coast speed dash would be even more impressive if the aircraft, a Staggerwing C17R were flown by a woman. Louise Thaden and Blanche Noyes flashed across the Los Angeles finish line to win the Bendix trophy in a record 14 hours and 44 minutes after departing from New York.
In 1936, the company issued common stock and changed its name to Beech Aircraft Corporation. A year later it introduced the Model 18 twin-engine Beechcraft. The plane was an immediate success as a corporate transport. During World War II, more than 90 percent of all United States bombardiers and navigators learned their skills in military configurations of the Beechcraft Model 18. The company continued to manufacture the Model 18 for 32 years and in 1969 the final deliveries of the plane were made.
As the company grew, so did the Beech family. Walter and Olive Ann Beech's daughters, Suzanne and Mary Lynn, were born in 1937 and 1940 respectively, and Olive Ann filled the dual role of businesswoman and mother.
By 1938, the company had survived the lean years of the Depression and reached sales in excess of $1 million dollars for the first time. Yet the turmoil in Europe was soon to take its toll on the aviation industry, and in 1940, all commercial production was suspended as the company geared up for defense manufacturing. Demand for the military versions of the Beechcraft Model 17 and Model 18 caused backlogs in order of $22 million in 1940 and $82 million in 1941. Employment at the company jumped from 235 in 1939 to well over 4,000 by 1942.
Illness struck Walter in 1940 and left him hospitalized for nearly a year and the responsibility of overseeing the company fell to Olive Ann. Relying on her 15 years of working closely with Walter, Olive Ann stepped into the leadership role without hesitation and steered the company through the turbulent year. On of her first fiscal actions was to arrange millions of dollars in loans to finance the company's changeover to military production. Employment reached 14,000 during the war years resulting in manufacturing of more than 7,400 military Beechcrafts and thousands of assemblies for other major aircraft firms under subcontract. During this period, the company received five Army-Navy "E" Awards for efficiency.
When the war ended Walter and Olive Ann were ready to go forward with post-war operations. The commercial version Model 18 was certified by the FAA and was ready for production. The single-engine, V-tail Beechcraft Bonanza, introduced in 1946 became a leader in its field. Pent-up demand during the war years resulted in hundreds of new orders for general aviation planes. Nearly 1,000 aircraft were delivered during an eight-month period in 1947. The Model 18 was followed in 1949 by the rugged Beechcraft Twin-Bonanza and in 1954 by the advanced Super 18.
With the beginning of hostilities in Korea, there again was the emergency demand from the military forces for aviation support. Faced with a mountain of defense orders, Olive Ann arranged for a $10 million loan to procure material, purchase parts and meet a payroll that jumped from 2,500 employees in 1950 to more than 13,000 in two years.
Unfortunately, 1950 also brought tragedy to the Beech family. On November 29, 1950, Walter Beech's career ended suddenly with a fatal heart attack. His friends in the aviation industry called him one of America's greatest aircraft designers and industrialists.
Following Walter's death, Olive Ann was elected president and chairman of the board and took over the reins of the company. She held these position until 1968 when she named Frank E. Hedrick president of the company, while she remained chairman and chief executive officer.
Under Olive Ann's guidance, Beechcraft continued its growth through deliberate, planned policies of expansion and diversification, and by an early entry into the nation's space program. It also developed a line of missile targets for training and acquired a wide variety of subcontracts from other major aerospace manufacturers.
To meet the increased demand from business and industry, commercial airplane models were increased from three in 1951 to nine in 1964. These new models included the Travel Air, Queen Air, Debonair, Baron, Musketeer and King Air, the first of the series which was to lead the world in corporate jet propulsion production.
Pursuing diversification of manufacturing, Beechcraft teamed with other major aircraft firms to produce assemblies for the jet fighters, transports and helicopters of McDonnell, Lockheed, Convair, Republic, Martin and Bell Helicopter.
Throughout the years, Olive Ann's leadership brought continued growth and expansion to the company. In February 1980, the decision was made to merge Beech Aircraft Corporation with the Raytheon company, and Olive Ann was elected to the Board of Directors of Raytheon. Two years after the merger, Olive Ann retired and was elected Chairman Emeritus of the company she and Walter had co-founded. While retired from the day-to-day business activities in which she was involved for five decades, Olive Ann continued her long devotion to aviation and the company.
Olive Ann received virtually every award the aviation industry could bestow, including the prestigious Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy. Both Walter and Olive Ann were inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio, one of only two couples in aviation history to be accorded this honor. She was affectionately known as "The First Lady of Aviation."
In addition to being known for guiding her company to success, Olive Ann was equally known for her enthusiastic support of cultural, religious, economic and educational programs in her community, state and country. She was a strong supporter of the Wichita Symphony, and she helped organize the Music Theatre of Wichita and the Wichita Center for the Arts. Throughout her life she supported education with scholarship programs for Wichita State University, Southwestern College and the Kansas Foundation for Private Colleges.
On July 6, 1993, at the age of 89, Olive Ann Beech died at her home in Wichita. The imagination and pioneering spirit of Walter H. and Olive Ann Beech are an inspiration to the aviation industry and to the nation, and their lives will continue to influence future generations.
