The Gladys Cox Papers contain newspaper clippings, correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, artifacts, and miscellaneous material relating to her involvement in various local, state, and national social and political organizations. The contents of each series are arranged alphabetically by subject, and chronologically within each subject, unless otherwise indicated.

Biography

Gladys Cox was born in Fairview, Kansas on January 10, 1912. She moved to Wichita, Kansas, in 1930 to attend the Wichita Business College. After graduation she became the Education Director of the First Baptist Church in Wichita. Cox later worked in the Sedgwick County Election Office, the district court, and the sheriff's office before she was appointed Sedgwick County Election Commissioner in 1961. She resigned from that position six years later. Cox spent the remainder of her life involved in various social and Republican party political organizations. Gladys Cox died on April 19, 1999, at the age of 87.

Detailed Description: Series Listing

Series 1 Box 1 FF 1-7 Political Organizations. This series contains newspaper clippings, correspondence, artifacts, and miscellaneous material from her years as a member of the Kansas Republican State Committee, Sedgwick County Republican Central Committee, Sedgwick County Republican Women's Club, and as Election Commissioner of Sedgwick County. Of particular interest in the series are letters from Richard Nixon and Nancy Reagan thanking Cox for her support. 1936-1984.
Series 2 Box 1 FF 8-Box 3 Social and Professional Organizations. This series consists of constitutions, by-laws, correspondence, and scrapbooks which contain newspapers clippings, newsletters, photographs, and miscellaneous material. The series primarily documents Cox's tenure as president of the Business and Professional Women's Club in 1962-1963 and the Prairie Pilot Club of Wichita in 1964-1965. The series also includes scrapbooks, which include materials related to these clubs. 1962-1978.
Series 3 Box 4 Photographs. Most of the photographs in this series are undated. This series contains photographs of groups of women attending Business and Professional Women's Club banquets and Washington D.C. for National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) conferences. The series also contains photos of Cox at work in the Election Commissioners Office. Of note in the series are photographs of the NFRW women taken with Congressmen Bob Dole, Garner Shriver, Joe Skubitz, as well as Pat Nixon. 1954-1971.
Series 4 Box 5 Artifacts. This series includes an original car bumper sign used during Alf Landon's Presidential Campaign in 1936, wooden painted Republican logo, and a sunflower badge with lapel pins.

Series 1 ‒ Political Organizations

Box 1 FF 1 Election Commissioner, 1961-1965. This file includes photographs, correspondence, clippings, and a certificate recognizing Cox as Election Commissioner.
Box 1 FF 2 Election Commissioner, 1966. The file contains court documents including Court Summons, Journal Entry of Judgment and Writ of Mandamus, Motion for Inspection and Reproduction of Documents, and Statement of intention to contest election. The file also includes listings of townships.
Box 1 FF 3 Kansas State Republican Committee, 1960-1974. File includes correspondence to and from Gladys Cox, Minutes of the State Committee Meeting (July 1974), clippings, part of an Precinct Committee Member Notebook, and a Kansas Republican Precinct Manual.
Box 1 FF 4 Sedgwick County Republican Central Committee, 1959-1974. File includes clippings, correspondence, list of committee members by Wards, manuscript notes, meeting minutes, and a Certificate of Appreciation for Gladys Cox (1988).

File includes clippings, correspondence (includes correspondence to Gladys Cox from Richard Nixon and Nancy Reagan), 1960 Nixon decal, Presidential Election Handbook (1960), Constitution and By Laws of the Abraham Lincoln Republican Club of Sedgwick County, Kansas, and drawings to be used for place cards, table decorations and identification tags.

Box 1 FF 8 Business and Professional Women's Club, 1962-1974. File includes the yearbook/roster for the R. E. D. Club of Business and Professional Women (1961-62, 1973-74).
Box 1 FF 9 Prairie Pilot Club of Wichita, 1964-1978. File includes Code of Ethics (circa 1960s), Club Rules, Membership Roster (1977), History of the Club (1977), The Pilot Log (1978 newsletter), and Manual on Division Work.
Box 2 R. E. D. Club of Business and Professional Women, 1962-63. This box contains an original scrapbook consisting of photographs, member signatures, correspondence, clippings, postcards, greeting cards, name cards, yearbooks, and other materials relating to the R. E. D. Club.
Box 3 Prairie Pilot Club of Wichita, 1964-65. This box contains an original scrapbook consisting of photographs, member signatures, correspondence, clippings, postcards, greeting cards, name cards, yearbooks, and other materials relating to the Prairie Pilot Club.
