The Sheldon Kamen collection consists of meeting agendas, board meeting minutes, project reports, correspondence, news clippings, photographic images, and videos pertaining to his career as a member of both the Wichita Board of Education and the Wichita City Council.

Biography

Sheldon Kamen graduated from Wichita State University in 1969 with a degree in History. He then continued his education at the university receiving an MA in History in 1973 and an MA in Political Science in 1979. He served the Wichita community as a Board of Education member for six years (1979-1985) and a City Councilman for fourteen years (1985-1999). During his career he has held the positions of Board of Education President (1981-82) and Vice Mayor.

Series 2 -- Wichita City Council
Series 2.1 Box 23 FF8 - Box 29 FF21 Meeting Agendas. This series contains agendas for the Wichita City Council from April 1985 to April 1999. An ordinance on April 14, 1987 reads, "Whereas, as a result of a Charter Ordinance passed on January 6, 1987, to reflect the governing body's true role as the legislative and policy body, it is to be known from this day forward as the City Council made up of City Council Members;", changing the name of the governmental group. For this reason there are agendas for both the City Commissioners and the City Council.
Series 2.2 Box 29 FF22 - Box 34B FF3 Proceedings of Meetings. This series containsthe proceedings for the Wichita City Council from April 1985 to November 1996. There are proceedings for both the City Commissioners and the City Council as a result of above stated ordinance.
