Content Note

The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, and documents which illustrate the life of Red Shadoan as an athlete as well as a member of the community within the Wichita area. Although most clippings and photographs do not contain dates it is believed that the scrapbook covers a time span from 1927 to 1964.
 

Administrative History

Robert Shadoan, who was better known as Red because of his hair color, was born April 4, 1910 in Oklahoma. He attended high school in Indiana and then followed his family to Wichita. He enrolled at Wichita University in 1929 and quickly became a hometown hero because of his prowess in athletics. A member of the football team from 1929-32, Red was named to the All Conference Team as a Tackle three consecutive years. He was also a member of the basketball team where he won similar honors. After graduating from the university in 1933 Red was offered a coaching position with Wichita University. He served as line coach for the football team and assistant coach for the Freshmen basketball team for two years. After his coaching stint Red took a position as an agent for the New York Life Insurance Company, while continuing to work out of Wichita. His love for sports never ceased and he became well known around the area for his officiating skills. He was often hired to referee basketball games, wrestling matches, boxing matches, football games, as well as umpire baseball games. It was during this time that he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and although by 1940 the paralysis caused by the disease had confined him to a wheelchair, Red was still actively involved in athletics. He was head of the National Baseball Congress advance ticket drive and continued his love for sporting events by either listening to them on the radio or attending them whenever possible. In 1959 a campus road near the basketball arena was dedicated to Red and renamed "Shadoan Drive". Red Shadoan died in 1964 and has since been elected to the Wichita State University Hall of Fame.

Series Listing

Series 1 Box 1 Scrapbook. This series contains a scrapbook composed of newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence and other documents surrounding the life of Red Shadoan.
Series 2 Box 2 Loose Items. This series contains items that were found loose throughout the scrapbook. Theyhave been divided and include photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and miscellaneous items.
