Content Note

This collection contains the correspondence of Edward T. Latta and certain members of his family dating from 1860-1892. Latta alternately served as an officer in the Union Army in the Indian Territories, in land speculation, the cattle and hog industry and as a notary public. The majority of the letters consist of those written by Latta to his wife Millie ("Pet") and his sons. Additional letters are those written to and from Latta by friends and family. Also contained within the collection are IOUs, a land deed signed by James Buchanan, a tariffs pamphlet from the office of William B. McKinley, and envelopes and cards relating to various business ventures of Latta.

Series 1 Box 1 FF 1-3 Correspondence of Edward Latta. This series contains correspondence both sent and received by Edward Latta. The letters date between the 1860s and 1880s.
Series 2 Box 1 FF 4-7 Latta Family Correspondence. The files in this series are comprised of the Latta family correspondence. The letters date between the 1860s and 1880s.
Series 3 Box 1 FF 8-11 Business and Military Records. This series contains the business and military records of Edward Lattas.

Series 1 ‒ Correspondence of Edward T. Latta

Box 1 FF 1 Correspondence to Wife and Sons, 1880-1884. This folder consists of letters written by Edward T. Latta to his wife Millie and his sons. Due to excessive drinking, Latta is estranged from his family. Through this series of letters, he chronicles his attempts to regain his sobriety and reputation, earn the trust of his family and be able to provide for them in a fitting manner.
Box 1 FF 2 Correspondence to Mother from Edward T. Latta, 1860-1866. This folder contains letters from Edward to his mother written from Leavenworth City.
Box 1 FF 3 Correspondence to Edward T. Latta, 1861-1875. This folder contains letters received by Edward T. Latta from various individuals. Topics range from casualties among friends due to the war, to well-being of friends and family, to land deals and the lending and borrowing of money.
