Content Note

The Edwin A. Ulrich Papers consists of two separate series documenting his life and his art collection. The first (Boxes 1-12) consists of personal papers, diaries, personal correspondence, business records, clippings, and photographs from 1909 to the1990s. The second series (Boxes 12-15) includes exhibit catalogs, correspondence, clippings, and photographs related to Edwin A. Ulrich's art collection. The collection consists of artwork by the Waugh Family, including Samuel Bell Waugh 1814-1885, Frederick Judd Waugh 1861-1940, and Coulton Waugh 1896-1973. The materials date between the 1950s and the 1990s. The series also includes materials regarding Edwin A. Ulrich's donations to Wichita State University and the development of the Edwin A. Ulrich Art Museum on the WSU campus. Files concerning paintings, exhibits and correspondence from Wichita State University were retained by the Ulrich Museum.

Series 1.1 Box 1 FFs 1 - 8 Personal Papers. This series includes personal records of Edwin A. Ulrich including biographical information, birth certificate, information regarding the birth and death of his child, passports, materials from his school days, wedding and divorce records, and his wills.
Series 1.2 Box 1 FF 9 - Box 5 Diaries. This series contains Edwin A. Ulrich's personal diaries. They are arranged chronologically and span from 1909 to 1993. The diaries include limited entries of daily activities.
Series 1.3 Box 6 - Box 10 FF 6 Personal Correspondence. This series contains personal correspondence both sent and received by Edwin A. Ulrich between the late 1910s to the 1990s. The letters have been arranged alphabetically. According to original order, if a last name is unknown the letter has been alphabetized by the first name. Letters found in the "General" folders were not given a separate folder in Edwin A. Ulrich's original filing system.
Series 1.4 Box 10 FF 7 - Box 11 FF 3 Business Records. The files in this series contain correspondence, financial information and other documents related to Edwin A. Ulrich business activities. They have been arranged by chronological order and include records for the Cuban American Sugar Company (primarily 1920s-1930s), the Richfield Oil Corporation (1940s-1950s) and the Dutchess Oil Company (1930s-1970s).
Series 1.5 Box 11 FF 4 - Box 12 FF 3 Personal Interests. The materials in this series may contain correspondence, clippings, photographs and other ephemera concerning the personal interests and activities of Edwin A. Ulrich. Series 2.1 Box 12 FFs 6 - 19 Exhibits of Artwork by the Waugh Family. This series includes catalogs from art exhibits featuring members of the Waugh Family (Samuel Bell Waugh 1814-1885; Frederick Judd Waugh 1861-1940; Coulton Waugh 1986-1973). The series has been arranged alphabetically by place of exhibit and ranges from the 1950s-1970s.
Series 2.2 Box 12 FF 20 - Box 13 FF 16 Waugh Family Artwork Exhibit Correspondence. The files in this series include correspondence both sent and received by Edwin A. Ulrich concerning exhibits of art from the Waugh family. The series has been arranged alphabetically and dates from the 1950s-1980s.
Series 2.3 Box 13 FFs 17 - 23 Artwork by the Waugh Family. The files in this series contains general materials regarding the Waugh Family. These materials include appraisals of Waugh artwork owned by Edwin A. Ulrich (1960s and 1990s), auction catalogs featuring Waugh artwork for sale, and biographical information on the Waugh family.
Series 2.4 Box 14 FFs 1 - 18 Correspondence Regarding Artwork by the Waugh Family. This series contains correspondence both sent and received by Edwin A. Ulrich and is arranged alphabetically. The letters discuss Waugh in some manner, but are not related to requests for exhibits. The letters range from the 1960s-1980s.
Series 2.5 Box 14 FFs 19 - Box 15 FF 6 Wichita State University. The files in this series include correspondence, agreements, financial records and other materials regarding the donation of artwork and money by Edwin A. Ulrich to the Wichita State University for the Edwin A. Ulrich Art Museum.
Series 2.6 Box 15 FF 7 - Box 16 FF 5 General Art Files. The folders in this series include correspondence, clippings, photographs and other materials regarding artwork. The materials in this collection relate to non-Waugh artwork.
