Content Note

The collection consists of correspondence, appointment books and schedules, subject files, budget materials, and annual reports all documenting a portion of the career of Michael D. Hill as Sedgwick County Sheriff. The materials date between 1984 and 1999.

Administrative History

After serving in the Navy, Mike Hill returned to his hometown of Wichita, Kansas where he joined the police department in 1963. He was promoted to sergeant in 1968, lieutenant in 1975, and captain in 1976. In 1979 he became the commander of the Wichita Police Department's Special Investigations section. Soon after, he was asked to run for Sedgwick County Sheriff by local Republicans. Hill defeated the incumbent and spent the next sixteen years as sheriff. He retired in January 2001 after a thirty-seven year career in law enforcement.

Series Listing

Series 1 Box 1 FF 1 - Box 9 FF 7 Correspondence. This series is divided into three groups. The first includes printed copies of interoffice email messages sent and received by Sheriff Mike Hill between 1989 and 1998 (Box 1 FF 1 - Box 5 FF 4). The second group consists of correspondence files which may include invitations, memos, news or press releases, and other general correspondence (Box 5 FF 5 - Box 9 FF 1). These materials date between 1992 and 1999 and are then divided as either SENT or RECEIVED and arranged chronologically. The folder titles are as originally titled by Sheriff Hill. The final group of correspondence includes phone message slips left for Sheriff Hill (Box 9 FF 2 - Box 9 FF 7). These slips include a month and day, but not always a year.
Series 2 Box 9 FF 8 - Box 10 FF 11 Appointment Books and Schedules. Series includes appointment books (Box 9 FF 8 - Box 10 FF 3) and printed appointment schedules (Box 10 FF 4 - FF 11 ) for Sheriff Hill from 1984 to 1997.
Series 3 Box 10 FF 12 - Box 13 FF 2 Subject Files. The series includes files arranged by subject The folders may includes reports, manuals, handbooks, correspondence, meeting minutes, and clippings. Of particular interest are the folders regarding the expansion of the Sedgwick County jail. The files are arranged alphabetically.
Series 4 Box 13 FF 3 - FF 7 Budget Materials. Includes Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department Budget Requests, 1993-1996.
Series 5 Box 13 FF 8 - FF17 Annual Reports. Includes the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department Annual Reports, 1986, 1987, and 1989 - 1996.
