The Walter A. VerWiebe Papers include materials that range in date from 1916 to 1961. This includes published writings, research/subject files, photographs, artifacts and ephemera, and other materials that document the career of Walter A. VerWiebe as a field geologist, published author, and educator.

Biography

Dr. VerWiebe was born August 26, 1887 in New York. His honored career in the field of Geology included field work, teaching, and publishing. This included summer stints in Pennsylvania, and with the Ohio, Michigan, and Kansas geological survey teams. He served as Field Geologist for Roxana (Shell) Petroleum Company, and Chief Geologist for the Sinclair Oil Company in Mexico and Alaska. His teaching experience included stays at Ohio State University, 1913-1918, the University of Michigan, 1923-1927, and the University of Wichita from 1927 until his retirement in 1955. His voluminous publication record includes the standards Historical Geology and How Oil Is Found. Dr. VerWiebe passed away in 1961 at seventy-three years of age.

Series Listing

Series 1 Box 1 - Box 5 Professional Writings. The series includes the published professional writings of Dr. VerWiebe and others in his field. Dr. VerWiebe's writings, Box 1 FF 1 - Box 3 FF 10, are arranged alphabetically by title and include books and journal articles from 1927 to 1957. The publications by others in his field, Box 3 FFs 4 - 24 are also arranged alphabetically by title and span the years 1922 to 1962. Also included is a look into the publication process of a book with the galley/proof copies of two of Dr. VerWiebe's books, How Oil Is Found, located in Box 4, and North American Petroleum, in Box 5.
Series 2 Box 6 - Box 10 FF 4 Research/Subject Files. These files have been arranged alphabetically by title and may include articles clipped from journals, drafts of papers or chapters, maps, correspondence, personal writings, and paper ephemera.
Series 3 Box 10 FFs 5 - 9 University of Wichita. The series helps document the Geology department during VerWiebe's tenure at the university, 1927 - 1953. Also included are materials discussing the Walter A. VerWiebe Geology Scholarship, established in 1954.
Series 4 Box 10 FFs 10 - 13 Organizations. Directories and ephemera from many of the organizations of which VerWiebe was a member.
Series 5 Box 10 FFs 14 - 17 Photographs. Series includes two photograph albums the first labeled "Bryce + Zion Utah" and the second "Yellowstone + Teton." Also included are photographs of VerWiebe and several stereoview cards.
Series 6 Box 10 FF 18 and Box 11 Artifacts and Ephemera. The series includes personal artifacts of VerWiebe including a wallet, lists of items needed for trips, samples of VerWiebe name cards, Posts Field Book with manuscript notes and drawings, the book Terry's Mexico, and a commencement gown, hood, and cap.
Series 7 Box 12 Oversized. Series includes oversized items including a Recognition Award, a Dr. Walter A. VerWiebe Geology Scholarship scrapbook that includes photographs and letters to honor and congratulate his achievements, 1954; photograph scrapbook of land areas (most labeled), and University of Wichita clippings scrapbooks, 1927-1932, 1933-1937, 1938-1952.
