Content Note

The Roy K. Varenhorst Collection of John M. Hickman and Roy K. Varenhorst Papers includes correspondence, drawings, contracts and agreements, specification books, meeting and conference notes, bid forms, proposals, statements, and other project documents related to the architectural projects designed by Hickman and Varenhorst. The collection also includes project presentation books for projects designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Taliesin Associated Architects, articles about Wright, and Frank Lloyd Wright ephemera and publicity. Personal papers of both architects are present in the collection along with clippings, images, and artifacts. A large part of the collection is comprised of materials documenting Century II, a civic building, designed by Hickman and Varenhorst, in Wichita, Kansas, and the Corbin Education Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright while John Hickman and Roy Varenhorst served as Kansas Representatives of the Taliesin Associated Architects. It is located on the campus of Wichita State University. Materials in the collection range from the 1940s to the 1990s.

Administrative History

John M. Hickman was born May 28, 1925, in Amarillo, Texas. His family came to Wichita in the late 1930s where Hickman attended Robinson Intermediate and East High schools. Hickman worked as an illustrator of manuals for the Aero Parts Manufacturing Company while in high school, but left his senior year to work as an illustrator for Lockheed Aircraft Company in California. Hickman entered the Army Air Corps during World War II and received his fighter pilot wings in 1944. After the war, he returned to Wichita and completed the work necessary for his high school diploma while also employed as an illustrator at Beech Aircraft Company. He left Wichita where he studied architecture at the University of Illinois and worked as an apprentice under Frank Lloyd Wright. Hickman returned to Wichita where he worked for the architectural firm Thomas & Harris before starting Architects Associated with Arthur T. Woodman in 1954. In 1961 he partnered with Roy K. Varenhorst to form John M. Hickman and Associates, Architects & Planning Consultants. Hickman committed suicide April 23, 1964.

Roy K. Varenhorst was born September 25, 1928, in Conway Springs, Kansas, where he graduated high school in 1946. He then received a degree in Architecture from Kansas State University in 1950. Varenhorst served in Korea as a naval pilot, earning among other honors, the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement. After his Honorable Discharge, Varenhorst was an apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright at his Taliesin Studios. In 1958 Varenhorst joined Architects Associated with John M. Hickman and Arthur T. Woodman. In 1961 he partnered with Hickman to form John M. Hickman and Associates, Architects & Planning Consultants. After Hickman's death in 1964, Varenhorst maintained the firm, later renaming it Roy K. Varenhorst & Associates in 1966. Varenhorst died April 24, 1997.

Series 1 Box 1 FF 1 - Box 18 FF 26 Architectural Projects. The series includes architectural project files of architects John M. Hickman and Roy K. Varenhorst. The series includes specifications, agreements, contracts, bid proposals, correspondence, furniture & equipment information, financial information, testing reports, and drawings. Materials are from the offices of Architects Associated (John Hickman with Arthur T. Woodman); John M. Hickman and Architects Associated; John M. Hickman and Associates, Architects & Planning Consultants (with Roy K. Varenhorst); and Roy K. Varenhorst and Associates. Materials date between 1950s and the 1970s. The architect's original folder titles were maintained, when available. Also includes the nonproject related office files of the aforementioned architectural firms. Files include correspondence, samples of office letterhead, logos and business cards, draft of partnership between Hickman and Varenhorst, and typed excerpts and quotations.
Series 2 Box 19 Frank Lloyd Wright. The files in this series contain materials associated with Frank Lloyd Wright. This includes presentation books for projects by Wright and Taliesin Associated Architects, articles about Wright, book catalogs, announcements, and Prairie School Press information. Series also includes transcript of a Wright lecture, audio cassettes, and promotional materials for Wright and Taliesin related projects and events
Series 3 Box 20 FF 1- 12 Personal. John M. Hickman personal files, includes correspondence, certificates, burial information, and a scrapbook with photos and clippings of early work in Illinois and Wichita. The personal files for Roy K. Varenhorst include materials documenting his educational years from middle school through college at Kansas State University, including common school diploma, high school yearbook, college class schedules, exams, and class notes. Also includes are certificates and other files from his career in the Navy, and correspondence and reference materials regarding the Varenhorst family history.
Series 4 Box 20 FF 13 - Box 21 FF 17 Clippings. The series includes original and photocopied newspaper clippings. The files are arranged alphabetically by their original folder titles and discuss various projects of Hickman & Varenhorst. Clippings span the 1950s through the 1990s.
Series 5 Box 21 FF 18 - Box 22 FF 28 Images. The files in this series include photographs, negatives, and slides. The files are arranged alphabetically by subject. Original folder titles were used.
Series 6 Box 23 Artifacts. Includes two ceramic ashtrays, Taliesin paperweight, Frank Lloyd Wright medallion, Piece from the Frank Lloyd Wright "Clay House, " and Roy K. Varenhorst's Navy ribbons and medals
