The collection consists of oral history recordings on audio and video cassette, color photographic printouts, and research materials documenting El Huarache, an early Mexican barrio in Wichita, Kansas.

Administrative History

Carolyn Rosales Benitez researched and collected the materials in this collection for a Kansas Humanities Council grant funded project. Benitez developed her findings into the exhibit El Huarache: A Photographic Look Back at One of Wichita's First Mexican Barrios held at the La Familia Senior/Community Center in Wichita.

Detailed Description: Series Listing

Series 1 Box 1 FF 1-15 Oral Histories. The series includes oral histories collected for the exhibit, El Huarache: A Photographic Look Back at One of Wichita's First Mexican Barrios. Interviews were recorded on both audio and video cassette and typed transcriptions are available.
Series 2 Box 1 FF 16-17 Images. Includes color photographic printouts of the images used in the exhibit and a clippings scrapbook covering the 1940s-1950s. The exhibit images are labeled and are arranged in the order they appear in the exhibit booklet.
Series 3 Box 1 FF 18-21 Research Materials. Materials collected include census information, notes from city and county directories, maps, oral history and image release forms, and image source information.
Series 4 Box 1 FF 22 Exhibit Publications. Booklets produced for the exhibit.

Folder includes two color printed booklets that include thumbnails of exhibit images; one is noted on the Dedication page "Corrected Version 2/1/2006." Folder also includes a version printed in Spanish on 8.5" x 11" paper without images.
