Literary Rights

Literary rights were not granted to Wichita State University. When permission is granted to examine manuscripts, it is not an authorization to publish them. Manuscripts cannot be used for publication without regard for common law literary rights, copyright laws and the laws of libel. It is the responsibility of the researcher and his/her publisher to obtain permission to publish. Scholars and students who eventually plan to have their work published are urged to make inquiry regarding overall restrictions on publication before initial research.

Content Note

As part of the Work Project Administration's American Guide Series, Kansas' first guidebook resulted from the research papers contained in this collection. Nearly half of Kansas' counties -- 50 of 105 -- are described in these papers. The subjects examined include the following: geography, early settlement history, music, religion, art, education, agriculture, industry, government, transportation, tourist accommodations, points of interest, and notable personalities. Biographical data about the writers is included as well as their personal evaluations of the Federal Writers' Project, an undertaking of the WPA. It is suggested that the "American Guide Classification of Topics" file (Box 1) be consulted before beginning research in this collection.
