The Bert Bandstra papers contain material on agriculture, congressional committees, and general correspondence regarding request invitations, and meetings. This collection, covering the 89th Congress and years 1965-1966, also includes papers concerning the war on poverty, interstate commerce, postal positions and data, and the military. Other significant files include the Democratic Party and State Department correspondence.

Biography

Bert Andrew Bandstra (1922-1995) was born in Monroe County, Iowa, January 25, 1922; attended New Sharon High School; United States Navy, 1942-1945; graduated from Central College, Pella, Iowa, 1950; graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1953; lawyer, private practice; Marion County attorney, 1955-1959; staff, United States Representative Neal Smith of Iowa, 1959-1964; elected as a Democrat to the 89th Congress (January 3, 1965-January 3, 1967); unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the 90th Congress in 1966 and the 91st in 1968; died on October 23, 1995, in Pella, Iowa; interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Pella, Iowa.
