Content Note
From 1950 to 1959, Myron V. George represented the people of Chanute and its vicinity in the U.S. House of Representatives. Files, photographs and newspaper clippings relating to his work, legislation, voting record, and election campaigns are included. Many of the documents in this collection contain information about dams and flood control in Kansas.
Biography
Myron Virgil George (1900-1972) was born in Erie, Neosho County, Kansas, January 6, 1900; attended the grade schools and graduated from Labette County High School at Altamont, Kansas; enlisted in April 1917 and served in the United States Army with rank of corporal until discharged in May 1919; learned the printing trade on the Altamont Journal, published by his father; owner and publisher of the Edna Sun from 1924-1941; officer with Kansas State Highway Commission, 1939-1950; elected as a Republican to the 81st Congress, November 7, 1950, in a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Herbert A. Meyer and at the same time was elected to the 82nd Congress; reelected to the three succeeding Congresses, and served from November 7, 1950, to January 3, 1959; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1958 to the 86th Congress; engaged in public relations in the transportation and construction fields; resided in Parsons, Kansas, until his death there April 11, 1972; interment in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
