Content Note

The Ben Hammond Collection contains editorial cartoons drawn by Ben Hammond, who was a cartoonist on the Wichita Eagle as well as a successful entertainer in his own right. Many of the editorial cartoons concern the controversy ignited over the proposed transition of privately funded Fairmount College to the status of a municipally funded institution, the University of Wichita. An integral part of the collection is a series of illustrations done by Hammond tracing the various phases of Wichita’s history and tradition from 1860 to 1900, which appeared in the Wichita Eagle. The collection also contains some political cartoons satirizing the Presidential election of 1948 between Truman and Dewey.
