Content Note
This collection primarily consists of correspondence that relates to the construction of a trunk line by the Chicago, St. Paul, Nebraska and Kansas Railway Company. The line, over 350 miles long, was to connect Arlington, Nebraska and St. John, Kansas. In support of this project, public officials and merchants wrote to A. M. Claflin, the president of the company, providing an example of the boosterism involved in railroad building in the late 1800s and documenting the vital need for transportation links to the cities of the East and Midwest from the Plains States. A revised 1888 prospectus also gives information on exact routes, financial details, and agricultural production of the affected states. Of the more than 1100 railroad lines chartered in Kansas, only 200 companies built track. Its construction never realized, the Chicago, St. Paul, Nebraska and Kansas was doomed to be a paper railroad.
