The Depression Era Relief Collection consists of transcriptions of 234 letters sent by residents of 47 North Carolina counties to various relief agencies and individuals during the Great Depression. The collection is arranged by county and, within counties, chronologically. The papers originally belonged to Roy Melton Brown, head of the School of Public Welfare and Social Work at the University of North Carolina. Faithfully reproduced in terms of spelling and grammar, these transcriptions embody the correspondents’ desperation and stress during the Depression years of the 1930s.
