Content Note

Nearly all the documents in this collection pertain to the years that Kincade was at the Fourth National Bank of Wichita, from his first job as vice president in 1937 to his retirement as president and chairman of the board in 1971. Correspondence from his friends and family is also included. The collection also includes notes used by Wichita State University professor James Thomas to write The Fourth - The Financial Center of Kansas: A History of the Fourth National Bank and Trust Company, a book which documents Kincade's influence on Wichita's economy.

Biography

Arthur W. Kincade, Sr. was born in 1896 in Chillicothe, Missouri. His interest in banking dated back to his job as office boy at a feed bank in Gage, Oklahoma. After leaving William Jewell College in 1915 he became a bookkeeper for a Gage, Oklahoma bank. At age 21 he became the mayor of Gage and married Mary Igou of Wellington. During the course of the next 19 years Kincade carried on a career in banking mostly in Texas, culminating with his presidency of the West Texas Mortgage and Loan Company in Amarillo.
In 1937, Kincade was hired to revitalize the Fourth National Bank and Trust Company in Wichita which would later become the Fourth Financial Corporation. In 1940 he was promoted to president and chairman of the board, thus giving him more latitude to invest in the Wichita aviation industry. Using loans as tool for development Kincade helped change the economic base of Wichita from agriculture to a combination of aviation, agribusiness and the energy industries.
Kincade retired from the Fourth in 1971 at the age of 75. He remained active in civic affairs until his death on February 5, 1989.
