Content Note

The Sam and Millie Marcus Collection contains a series of scrapbooks which contain newspaper clippings, photographs, awards, honors and other memorabilia that describe the Marcus family's influence in the business, social and civic life of Wichita. The scrapbooks date from 1949 to 1985. Sam Marcus was a Wichita businessman who amassed his fortune in the beef industry. For many years he was the president and chairman of the board of the Kansas Beef Industries, MBPXL, and Excel corporations. He and his wife Millie were involved in many social, civic and charitable organizations in the city.

Sam Marcus' obituary in Box 11 FF 7 gives excellent information about his life and career. The article in Box 11 FF 8 includes a time line of the development of Excel Corporation, the company which Marcus founded.

Twenty-six scrapbooks document the Marcuses' lives in these categories: Sam and Millie Marcus' involvement in civic, social, religious, and charitable organizations; their family's activities, including children and relatives; the dedication of the Marcus Center for Continuing Education at Wichita State University; and their business interests, including Kansas Beef Industries and MBPXL Corporation.
