Content Note

The collection of the Andre Family Papers consists of over sixty manuscript items including two letters from Major John Andre (1750-1780) to his uncle John Lewis Andre and a probate copy of the Last Will and Testament of Major Andre dated June 7, 1777. The majority of the collection is comprised of a series of fifty-six letters from J. L. Andre (Major John Andre’s cousin and also named John Lewis Andre) to his father John Lewis Andre discussing business and family affairs with references to European political and military developments, together with J. L. Andre’s journals of his trip to Genoa in 1796. For detailed descriptions of the correspondence, refer to the guide in Box 1 FF 10.

Series 1 ‒ John Lewis Andre Materials

Box 1 FF 1 Contains letters written by John Lewis Andre from Genoa to his father (also named John Lewis Andre) describing happenings going on in Europe. These letters are dated from January through June of 1794.
Box 1 FF 2 Contains letters written by John Lewis Andre from Genoa to his father. The letters contain personal matters. They are dated from July through December of 1794.
Box 1 FF 3 Contains letters written by John Lewis Andre from Genoa to his father. He describes what is taking place in France during this time including the guillotining of several hundred people. The letters are dated from January through June of 1795.
Box 1 FF 4 Contains letters written by John Lewis Andre from Genoa to his father. He tells about French and English ships movements and also of the political situation in France. These letters are dated from July through December of 1795.
Box 1 FF 5 Contains letters written by John Lewis Andre from Genoa to his father. He tells of the political situation in Europe. He also mentions letters from Naples telling of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. These letters are dated from January through June of 1796.
Box 1 FF 6 Contains letters written by John Lewis Andre from various places he is traveling including Genoa, Geneva, Cassel, and Yarmouth. He writes about wanting to return home. These letters are dated from July through December of 1796.
Box 1 FF 7 Contains two travel journals written by John Lewis Andre. One is a diary of his trip home to London dated November 2, 1796. Another account is of his voyage to Genoa, November 14, 1792.

Series 2 ‒ Major John Andre Materials

Box 1 FF 8 Contains two letters written by Major John Andre. The first one is dated from July 19, 1772 from Gottingen. He writes his uncle (John Lewis Andre, father of John Lewis Andre; see Series 1) about some business deals. Is glad to hear this commission has been sold. Assures him not to be uneasy about money. Explains how the business of money is transacted, writes about family. The other letter is dated May 14, 1772 from Amsterdam. Andre writes to his uncle in French.

Series 3 ‒ Andre Family Wills

Box 1 FF 9 Contains the wills of the Andre family. Also contains the will of Major J. L. Andre. These wills are undated.
