Content Note
This collection contains cartoons
drawn by Harold Talburt between 1949 and 1963. Talburt began his journalism
career as a reporter for the Toledo News-Bee in 1916. He became interested
in cartooning, and by 1933, he had won a Pulitzer Prize for one of his cartoons
for the Washington Daily News.
Biography
Harold Talburt was born in Toledo, Ohio, on February
19, 1895. He worked at miscellaneous jobs such as a soda jerk and a sign
painter before he joined the Toledo News-Bee in 1916 as a reporter.
In 1921, Negley Cochran set up Scripps-Howard's Washington Bureau and sent
for Talburt to work for him. In 1922, Talburt became Scripps-Howard's "chief
Washington cartoonist" from his job at the Washington Daily News.
In 1933, Talburt won a Pulitzer Prize. He was president of the Gridiron
Club in 1947. He retired in 1963 and died on October 22, 1966.
