The cartoon collection of Eldon Pletcher
was originally submitted to The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, Louisiana
as editorial cartoons. The collection includes cartoons from 1971 to 1972.
Biography
Eldon Pletcher was born in Goshen, Indiana on September
10, 1922 to Arthur and Dora (Cripe) Pletcher. He was a student at the Chicago
Academy of Fine Arts from 1941 to 1942. In 1945, he traveled to Scotland
and attended the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. From 1946 to 1947, Eldon
Pletcher attended the John Herron Art School in Indianapolis. Eldon Pletcher
began his career as a cartoonist at the Sioux City Journal, Iowa from 1949
to 1966. He then moved to the New Orleans Times Picayune (now Times-Picayune/States-Item)
and worked there from 1966 to 1985. He is currently an editorial cartoonist
and panel cartoonist for the First the Good News, distributed by Rothco
Cartoons, Inc. He has work in permanent exhibitions at Syracuse University,
University of Southern Mississippi, University of Cincinnati, Boston Museum
of Art, Harry S. Truman Library, Lyndon B. Johnson Library, and Wichita
State University. Pletcher served with AUS from 1943 to 1946. He was the
recipient of the Christopher Award in 1955 and was the recipient of the
Freedom Found Award for 12 years. He was a member of the Memorial Association
of American Editorial Cartoonists.
