| Series 1 | Box 1 - Box 6 FF 29 | Business Correspondence and Related Documents. This series is arranged chronologically from 1859-1910. The business correspondence found from 1910-1915 is a continuation of the real estate holdings of James R. Mead which was administered by his wife, Fern Mead. This series includes diaries, journals, trading post ledgers, account books, bills and receipts for goods bought and correspondence with business partners, notably William Mathewson. |
| Series 2 | Box 6 FF 30-39 | Kansas House of Representatives and Senate Papers. Arranged chronologically (1868-1870), this series contains correspondence and documents related to JRM's term as a state senator. |
| Series 3 | Box 7 | Personal Correspondence. This series is arranged chronologically from 1848-1879. This series contains letters between James R. Mead's family members and friends. |
| Series 4 | Box 8 | Manuscripts and articles written by James R. Mead, biographical information and memorabilia. This series contains manuscripts written by JRM about early Kansas history and the events he experienced. Many of these articles were printed in local newspapers and the Kansas Academy of Science publications. Additionally, this series contains manuscripts of which the author is unidentified, but, the subject is of local interest. Also included in this series is biographical information on JRM, poems, recipes and the Iowa College's newsletter entitled College Newsletter (October 1877). |
| Series 5 | Box 9 - Box 10 | Photographs. This series contains photographs, daguerreotypes, tintypes and ambrotypes of James R. Mead's family and friends. In addition, this series contains photographs of Native Americans, including a collection of Will Soule photographs. |

| Box 1 | FF 1 | Contains 1854 diary of James R. Mead (JRM) while in Davenport, Iowa. |
| Box 1 | FF 1A | Contains a travel journal kept by JRM during his trip from Davenport, Iowa to Kansas (p. 30-46) dated May 4-June 14, 1859. The book was also used as an account book for the Salina River Ranch 1860-61, (p. 68-82), for the White Water Post in 1863 (p. 1-14), and an account with the Coal Valley Lumber Yard in June and July 1858. The journal section includes descriptions of the terrain, trapping, difficulties encountered and JRM's feelings upon entering Kansas. A list of land belonging to JRM is also included (p. 124). |
