Content Note

This collection of Doris Larkins' papers is composed of photocopies of correspondence, announcements, agendas and other printed materials concerning the "Juneteenth" celebrations in 1978, 1980, and 1983. Juneteenth is a celebration of the date of June 19, 1865 when slaves in Texas learned of their emancipation. This day symbolizes the emancipation proclamation for blacks and is celebrated in many cities across the nation. The papers trace the formation and organizing for a similar celebration in Wichita.
