The City of Wichita Coal Gasification Collection tells the story of the City of Wichita's efforts to build an "alternative energy" Coal Gasification plant to convert coal to natural gas. This project was undertaken to meet the demands of the expanding Wichita area in the face of declining natural gas resources and the "energy crisis" of the late 1970s. The collection chronicles the City's effort to organize the initial stages of the proposed plant and submit the findings of the City and various interested companies to the citizens of Wichita in a public referendum. The vote in favor of the plant failed, partially due to public opinion and the high cost of funding the proposed plant. The collection traces the beginnings of the proposals, from gathering of information, the contracting of information gathering and engineering corporations to construct feasibility studies ranging from financial to construction concerns. The collection finishes with the preparation efforts to sway the public, the referendum vote and aftermath. The collection includes corporate and City correspondence, financial and legal records, project plans and designs, information on coal sources and various methods of transportation, various methods for the end of Coal Gasification, the interplay between the City and various businesses, and issues involved in a project of this type and scale. The City of Wichita Coal Gasification Collection allows a variety of research opportunities for researchers in history, Wichita history, business, and local development including the interplay between City government and the private business sector.
