Content Note

In his research, Dr. Jimmy Skaggs accumulated magazine and newspaper articles, government documents, correspondence, and his own notes regarding the 19th century guano trade and the history of Clipperton Island, one of the "Guano Islands." In 1856, the United States annexed these islands, claiming the resources, especially bird guano, a potent fertilizer, as its own over the claims of other nations. A professor of economics at Wichita State University from 1970 to 1996, Skaggs has authored two books from these research materials, namely The Great Guano Rush: Entrepreneurs and American Overseas Expansion and Clipperton: A History of the Island the World Forgot. The manuscripts and galley proofs for the books are included in this collection.
