Content Note

An organization with the purpose of advancing the status of women, the Soroptimists chartered its Wichita branch in 1936. In the years since, the club has been active in the community with its sponsorship of and involvement with civic enterprises such as Junior Achievement, Wichita Symphony, public television, and the Girl Scouts. This collection includes scrapbooks, photographs, publications, minutes of board and business meetings, and other business records.

Administrative History

Soroptimist is a word created by combining the Latin words for sister ("Soror") and best ("Optima"). Advancing the status of women is one of the purposes of the organization.

October 1921 in Oakland, California, saw 85 women executives sign the first charter of the Soroptimist Club. By 1928, the Soroptimist International Association was formed. The individual clubs participate in and initiate civic enterprises for the social, cultural and economic betterment of their communities. They also help develop interest in national and international affairs.

The Wichita branch of the Soroptimist Club was formed in 1936 with 16 members. In the early years, the organization focused on serving the community by sponsoring lecturers and projects.

World War II began, and the club turned its attention to the nation. In 1942, the club began the Wichita Canteen which provided snacks and personal items to the soldiers departing for military duty.

In 1950 the club purchased a house at 3754 East Douglas in Wichita. The house became the club's permanent meeting place.

The club raised funds for the Eisenhower Foundation Memorial in 1954. Five pylons were erected at the memorial by the Soroptimist clubs of Kansas and the Kansas Daughters of the American Revolution.

During the years that followed, the club sponsored many projects serving the citizens of Wichita: Wichita Art Museum, Junior Achievement, Wichita Symphony, public television and others. The club has continued to sponsor speakers and projects, and has recognized many local leaders in an effort to pursue its goal of the betterment of woman and service to the community.

Series 1 Box 1- Box 3 FF7 Presidential Notebooks. These notebooks contain minutes of board meetings, minutes of business meetings, committee reports, treasurers reports, division and regional information, international information, and correspondence. The term of president runs from July 1 to June 30.
Series 2 Box 3 FF8 - Box 5 FF8 Minutes. These notebooks contain the minutes of board meetings, business meetings, treasurer's reports, and interclub council reports.
Series 3 Box 5 FF9 - Box 7 FF4 Committee and Special Projects Reports. This series contains committee and special projects reports that were separate from the Presidential Notebooks. These reports were found in individual files, notebooks or loose in the collection.
Series 4 Box 7 FF5-13 Correspondence. This series contains correspondence both sent and received by the club.
Series 5 Box 7 FF 14-22 History. This series contains the written history of the Soroptimist Club from 1936 to 1994.
Series 6 Box 8 FF1-7 Publications. This series contains printed materials produced for or by the organization. They include yearbooks, by-laws, newsletters, banquet programs and books.
Series 7 Box 8 FF8 - 14 FF5 Scrapbooks. This series contains yearly and special events scrapbooks. Each scrapbook was copied in it's original form and then separated from its binder. The scrapbooks contain photographs, clippings, announcements, flyers, correspondence, reports, invitations and other ephemeral items.
Series 8 Box 14 FF5 - Box 17 Artifacts. This series contains assorted clippings, photographs, and awards. Also included in this series are oversized items such as plaques, certificates, photographs and a general ledger.
Series 9 Box 18 Additions. This series includes additional materials donated by the Soroptimist Club and although processed as a separate series, the materials have been organized in order of the main collection.
