Content Note

This collection contains the three notebooks of Helen Sheppard, an American nurse serving at the French Army Hospital at Juilly during World War I. The notebooks describe her service from 1916-1919, her visits to many historical scenes, and the fellow Americans she encountered. Also included are the letters and memoirs of French and American soldiers and pilots reflecting on the horrors of the war, the conduct of their regiments in battle, the German attacks and how they and their comrades were wounded. The notebooks contain a reference to Jimmy Doolittle and an eye operation he had, a photograph of a downed plane, a photograph of the trenches, and letters from French pilots accompanied by photographs of themselves and their planes.
