Content Note
The collection consists of the bound
handwritten journal of David M. Callis who enlisted in the United States
Navy on March 5, 1901. The diary covers the time period from 1901 to 1905
and describes some of the places he visited: Colón, Panama; the Culebra
Islands; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Lisbon, Portugal; Gibraltar; Piraeus and
Corfu, Greece; Trieste; Palermo; the Solomon Islands and many United States
ports. Callis also gives a detailed account of his glimpse of Panama at
the time of the construction of the Canal Zone. The remainder of the journal
has been utilized as a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, theatrical
programs, photographs and other documents dating between 1909 and 1920 concerning
Callis’ career as an actor and stage manager for numerous theatrical
companies.
