The collection consists of the handwritten diary of David M. Callis, who enlisted in the United States Navy March 5, 1901. The diary covers the time period from 1901 to 1905 and describes some of the places he visited: Colon, Panama; the Culebra Islands; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Horto Fojal Island, Azores; Lisbon, Portugal; Gibraltar; Piracus and Corfu, Greece; Trieste, Austria; Funsil, Hungary; Palermo, Sicily; the Solomon Islands and many United States ports. Callis also gives a detailed account of his glimpse of Panama at the time of the construction of the Canal Zone. The remainder of the diary is a scrapbook containing pictures, theatrical programs, newspaper clippings and other items.
