Content Note

This collection contains the papers of Robert Aitchison, who is most known as an artist, collector, bibliophile and map maker. The collection contains business and personal correspondence, correspondence relating to his collection of manuscripts, works by Aitchison such as sketches and maps, and information regarding the many books he collected.

Few people of the twentieth century can be described as a "Renaissance" person. One such person was Robert Aitchison, known as "Aitch" or Bob to his associates. His interests and activities were numerous and varied. As one of Wichita’s business leaders, he served on thirteen national, regional, and local civic and business boards. A printer by trade and an historian by avocation, he built up an extensive collection of rare printed materials and a collection of prehistoric American Indian relics. An art enthusiast, he organized art societies and created several landscape paintings and maps.

Robert Aitchison was born on December 5, 1887, to Clarence Robert and Mollie Shackle Aitchison in Columbus, Kansas. He attended the Albert T. Reid School of Art in Topeka, Kansas, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago. In 1908 he landed his first job as an artist at the Chicago Tribune. He moved from Chicago to San Antonio, Texas, to join the staff of the San Antonio Daily Express. Shortly after moving to San Antonio, Aitchison started up an advertising agency, and opened an art studio to engage in a freelance business. In 1911 he married Mary Cheshire, and they had a son, Peter Cheshire Atchison. He then moved to Denver and worked at the Hower Advertising Agency, the largest agency in the Rocky Mountain region. His work at the Hower Agency earned him a reputation as an original and experienced illustrator of business publicity. As his reputation grew, so too did the number of employment offers. The McCormick-Armstrong Company of Wichita asked him to take over as head of the art department, and in 1919 he did. Later he became the company’s treasurer, and continued as treasurer and on the board of directors even after he retired.

While working at the printing firm of McCormick-Armstrong, Aitchison developed an interest in old printing styles and techniques. He began collecting samples of ancient printing and over the years accumulated one of the most complete records of North American and United States printing history. His book and manuscript collection at the time of his death in 1974, at the age of 76, numbered in the hundreds and included four "firsts": De Vita Christiana, printed on a Gutenberg press in Mainz, Germany, in 1465; Doctrina Mexitica printed in Mexico City in 1539; Souldiery Spiritualized printed on the first press in the colonies in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1674; and a volume of the Gospels, printed in the Delaware Indian language in Kansas in 1837. Other rare items found in the collection are a Buddhist prayer printed in 770 A.D., 60 volumes of Virgil, and incunabula printed in Strasbourg in 1494.

The many examples of mapmaking in his collection drew Aitchison’s attention to making them himself. Before long he was drawing maps and illustrating them with his own little sketches. He created a series of maps of the states for the Mentholatum Company, and a historical map of the old west for the Santa Fe Trails Association. His well researched and drawn maps expanded Aitchison’s reputation internationally and turned his maps into collectors' items.

Not all of Robert Aitchison’s artistic talents went into his mapmaking. He also produced paintings, woodcuts and etchings. In 1964, the Wichita Art Association galleries placed 28 of his paintings of the Taos and Santa Fe regions of New Mexico on display. Two of his better known paintings set in Kansas are "Thunderhead Over Wheat" and "The Little Arkansas."

Somehow Aitchison managed to find time for all his historical and artistic endeavors while carrying on a business and actively participating in a number of societies and serving on several boards. After settling down in Wichita, Aitchison organized the Artists Guild with Herb Demmin, Leo Courtney, C. A. Seward and Ed Davison. For several years he was the president and director of the Kansas Historical Society. From 1933 until his death in 1964, he was the secretary-treasurer of the Wichita Art Association, and at the end of his life, he served as its chairman of the board. He also had been a president of the Wichita City Library Board, and a vice-president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
