Description: Looking east across the Little Arkansas River at the Riverside Boathouse (known earlier as Israel's Boathouse and Murdock Avenue Boathouse). Founded near the intersection of Murdock and Waco, in the late 1890s, the boat rental business and its original small structure, grew in size and commercial enterprise for more than 50 years. It was demolished during the "urban renewal" efforts of the 1960s.

Description: This photo was taken during the construction of the John Mack Bridge, located at 2700 South Broadway. It was dedicated on July 22, 1931. It was named for John Mack who died during the construction of the bridge. He was a prominent newspaper publisher, state representative and member of the state highway commission for this district. The bridge was an example of the Rainbow Arch as well as the longest bridge in Kansas.

Description: Birdseye view looking northwest from the Broadview Hotel (101 North Waco). Site of the Ackerman Island removal project, which was funded by federal funds during the Great Depression. The island was removed and displaced as lines of workmen hauled soil from the island in wheelbarrows and dumped it as fill on the west bank of the river. The Civil Works Administration, one of Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, paid the men about $12.00 a week for 30 hours of work [Wichita Eagle, 11/21/1933]. Ackerman Island had been the site of Wonderland Amusement Park and a baseball stadium. The bridges at center served the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The tall smokestack in the background was at the Kansas Gas and Electric Company plant. The Arkansas River winds northwesterly through the view.

Description: View looking slightly northeast at bridge over the Little Arkansas River between Twelfth and Thirteenth Streets on Bitting Avenue. The bridge was constructed in 1933 to replace a former, unsafe bridge. It was built with federal relief funds provided by the Civil Works Administration (CWA) during the Great Depression. The tower of Wichita High School North rises over the trees in the distant center background. The shadow of the photographer and his camera blend into the grass and shadows in the near foreground.

Campbell residence on the west side of the river. Funds for construction of the bridge were provided by a New Deal relief program, the Civil Works Administration, during the Great Depression. The shadow of the photographer and his camera on the grass in the foreground may have been a signature of Frank Wesely.
