Description: Looking northeast from intersection of Broadway and First Street. The Orpheum Theatre opened in 1922 featuring vaudeville acts and a silent film. In 1929 it began a tradition as a premier motion picture palace that ended in 1976. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Theatres. Another business in view is Dr. C. M. Cole, Dentist, in the Orpheum Building, and Mosbacher Hudson Terraplane Sales and Service at 214 North Broadway.

Description: The George Innes Dry Goods Company was formed in June 1897. In 1927, a six-story building was built on the northwest corner of Broadway and William to house the growing business. In December 1951, Innes was sold to Younker Brothers, Inc., of Des Moines, Iowa. Four years later it was bought by Macy's. Later, Macy's declared bankruptcy and the store closed. Across the street was the Bus Depot Lunch.

The far bank of the river was constructed from fill obtained by the removal of Ackerman Island during a WPA project (see item wschm_S2-2.1.1). At right is memorial park and fountain installed in 1934 to commemorate Wichita banker Ben McLean. Business names in view include: Fred Wasson Oil Company, J. W. Johnston Wool & Fur Company, Hobbs Chevrolet Company Used Cars, and J. H. Turner. Davis Hall of Friends University is barely visible in the background.
