    Content Note
This collection of Randolph Carpenter's Congressional papers covers the period from 1929 to the late 1940s, encompassing many of the economic problems caused by the Depression. Agriculture, the oil industry, and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) are among the subjects included in these materials from Carpenter's tenure in the Kansas House of Representatives and United States House. There is extensive information on New Deal programs, the controversial bid by Franklin D. Roosevelt for a fourth term as President, and Democratic Party activities at local and national levels as well as documents about the Star-Landon-Ratner Political Machine in Kansas politics of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Carpenter's private law practice in Marion, Kansas, is represented through client files and correspondence. An extensive compilation of World War I training manuals that describe weaponry and troop maneuvers originate from Carpenter's military service and are included in this collection.
