Content Note

Dating from 1814 to 1907, manuscripts and family correspondence that relate to the anti-slavery movement comprise this collection. Six members of William Lloyd Garrison's family are represented in the papers: his mother, Frances Maria Garrison; his wife, Helen Eliza Benson Garrison; and four of his children, William Lloyd Garrison, Jr., Wendell Phillips Garrison, Helen Frances ("Fanny") Garrison Villard, and Francis Jackson Garrison. William Lloyd Garrison was the founder and publisher of the Liberator, a famous anti-slavery journal, and was one of the founding members of the Anti-Slavery Society.

Biography

Six separate collections comprise the Eunice McIntosh Merrill Collection of William Lloyd Garrison Family Papers. The family members represented in the collection are: Frances Maria Garrison, mother of William Lloyd Garrison; Helen Benson Garrison, wife of William Lloyd Garrison; and William Lloyd Garrison, Jr. , Wendell Phillips Garrison, Helen Frances ("Fanny") Garrison Villard, and Francis Jackson Garrison, four of Helen Benson Garrison and William Lloyd Garrison's children.

Frances Maria (Fanny Lloyd) Garrison (d. 1823) was the mother of William Lloyd Garrison. Garrison's father, Abijah, an unemployed, alcoholic sailor, deserted Fanny and her three children in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1808. Leaving her children with a neighbor, Martha Farnham., during the day, Fanny struggled to support her family by working as a nurse. In 1812, the war having impoverished Newburyport, Fanny moved to Lynn, Massachusetts, with her eldest son, James. She left her daughter Elizabeth in the care of Martha Farnham; William Lloyd remained in Newburyport with Deacon and Mrs. Bartlett. Four years later, Fanny moved to Baltimore, where she died in 1823.

Helen Eliza Benson (1811-1876) married William Lloyd Garrison on 4 September 1834. The daughter of a retired, abolitionist merchant, Helen Benson Garrison was a devoted wife and mother. The Garrisons had seven children: George Thompson (1836), William Lloyd, Jr. (1838), Wendell Phillips (1840), Charles Follen (1842), Helen Frances ("Fanny," 1844), Elizabeth Pease (1846), and Francis Jackson (1848). Only five of the children reached adulthood. Elizabeth Pease died in 1848, Charles Follen in 1849.

On 30 December 1863, Helen Benson Garrison suffered a stroke which partially paralyzed her left side. She lived for twelve more years as an invalid, rarely leaving the house. On 25 January 1876, she died of pneumonia, preceding her husband in death by almost three years.

William Lloyd Garrison, Jr. (1838-1909) proved to be the financier of the Garrison children. A prosperous merchant and wool broker, William Lloyd, Jr., managed his father's financial affairs.

Wendell Phillips Garrison (1840-1907) was considered to be the brightest and most independent of the Garrison sons. He graduated from Harvard in 1861 and in 1865 he became literary editor of The Nation, a post he held until 1906. He married Lucy McKim in 1865; she died in 1877. His second wife was Annie McKim Dennis, whom he married in 1891.

According to Walter Merrill, Garrison's biographer (Against Wind and Tide), Helen Frances ("Fanny") Garrison (1844-1928) was "the favorite of both parents." The only surviving daughter of the Garrisons, Fanny married well, uniting with Henry Villard, a noted journalist and railroad executive, on 3 January 1866.

As William Lloyd Garrison, Jr., was his father's financial manager, Francis Jackson ("Frank") Garrison (1848-1916) was his father's companion, associate, and biographer. With his brother, Wendell, Frank published a four-volume biography entitled William Lloyd Garrison, 1805-1879; the Story of His Life as Told by His Children (1855-1894). Frank married Mary Pratt in 1879. Three years later death claimed both Mrs. Garrison, and their son Charles. Frank remarried (to Theresa Holmes) in 1891.
