Content Note
The Mary Otis Papers consists of nine letters from Mary Otis, a Quaker grandmother, in the 1850s and 1860s. Most of the letters are to her granddaughter in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The letters are written from Scituate, Massachusetts, a small town approximately 20 miles southeast of Boston. The letters include the use of pronouns – thou, thy, thine, etc., – in the Quaker fashion. Attendance at a Friends meeting is mentioned. The collection serves as a tool in understanding Quaker life and also a time period when scarlet fever and numerous illnesses were very common.
