Literary rights were not granted to Wichita
State University. When permission is granted to examine the manuscripts,
it is not an authorization to publish them. Manuscripts cannot be used for
publication without regard for common law literary rights, copyright laws
and the laws of libel. It is the responsibility of the researcher and his/her
publisher, to obtain permission to publish. Scholars and students who eventually
plan to have their work published are urged to make inquiry regarding overall
restrictions on publication before initial research.
Content Note
The Morton Levand Collection contains news clippings, articles, memoranda, photographs and memorabilia pertaining to Morton Levand and the Levand family publishing and personal history. A majority of the material in the collection is related to the family’s involvement in news publishing. A large series of material, memoranda and photographs, pertain to Morton Levand’s observation, as a member of the press corps, of the atomic bomb detonation testing on March 17, 1953. A majority of the collection is secondary source material, largely undated. Most news clippings have been photocopied, but not on archival paper.
Biographical Note
Denver-born promotion manager of the Wichita Beacon newspaper and son of John Levand, circulation manager of the Wichita Beacon, Morton Levand (1917-1997) had a career as entrepreneur, advertising promoter, newspaper reporter and promoter, music manager, inventor, songwriter and poet. The Levand brothers – John, Louis, and Max Levand – owned and managed the Wichita Beacon from 1928 through 1960.
