1. You will use two browsers to access two websites at the
same time. Access Wichita
Photo Archives. Open another browser and access
the Tihen
Notes. This will enable you to leave both Web sites active and refer
back and forth between them if necessary. |

2. Select a newspaper to search in the Tihen Notes.

|
You have read notes for an article about Carleton
School that
was published in the Wichita Eagle.
Now you will search the Wichita Beacon for more articles about
the school. |

|
|
3. Select a date to search in the Tihen Notes. |
|
|
You learned from the metadata that the building in the photos
was built in 1879. |
|
|
Open the drop-down menu of the Wichita Beacon,
scroll to 1879, and click Go. |
|
|
|
4. Search the Wichita Beacon by keyword.

|
You learned from the metadata that Carleton
School was
originally named First
Ward School.
Use Ward as your keyword. It is not necessary to capitalize.

|
|
|
Be aware that the program will also search words within words,
so you will see it select words such as Edward and
award. Check each selection to see if it relates to your
topic and continue searching. |

|
|
Use the Binoculars icon to make a keyword search.
After it finds the first selection, use the Binocular-with-Back-Arrow
icon to continue searching the same word. |

Several short articles will appear. |
|

5. Copy relevant articles if necessary:
Click on the Text Selection Tool button at top left (Capital
T).
Drag the cursor over article to highlight it.
Select copy in Edit menu or use keys Ctrl
+ c.
Open a Word document and select paste in Edit menu or use
keys Ctrl + v.
Save document; print if appropriate.

6. If time allows, follow the same procedures to locate articles
about the school in later years after it was renamed Carleton
School. |
