Lesson Plan Step 2: Comparing “Then” and “Now” Photographs

We Will Look for Changes in Wichita

Further practice in observation and analysis

Select the appropriate method for your class:

Data Projector with Internet access:

Locate the Student Activity Page and project on a screen.  Go to Step 2, “We Will Look for Changes in Wichita” and follow instructions for both “Then” and “Now” exercises.

Students at Personal Computers:

Instruct students to locate the Student Activity Page on their personal computers.  Go to Step 2, “We will Look for Changes in Wichita and follow instructions for both “Then” and “Now” exercises.

No Internet access:

Distribute printed copies of the Schweiter Vineyard and Hydraulic/Lincoln photographs in Step 2, “We will Look for Changes in Wichita and follow instructions for both “Then” and “Now” exercises.  Distribute copies of metadata after students have completed their written lists.

Photocopies of a printed download may not show as many details as image on screen.

What Has Changed Between “Then” and “Now”?

Students will work as individuals, pairs, or groups
to write analysis of two photographs. They then will write
a conclusion that compares the use of land shown in the photos.

Data Projector with Internet access:

Locate the Student Activity Page and project on a screen.  Go to Step2, “What Has Changed Between ‘Then’ and Now’?” and follow instructions for written exercise.

Students at Personal Computers:
Bookmark the Web address in “Favorites” menus of all the computers for quick access.

Instruct students to locate the Student Activity Page on their personal computers.  Go to segment “What Has Changed Between ‘Then’ and Now’?” and follow instructions for written exercise.

No Internet access:

Explain or distribute printed copies of the questions in the “What Has Changed Between ‘Then’ and Now’?” segment and follow instructions for written exercise.

Remind students of the way they observed details in the photograph of Street Scene in Lesson Plan Step 1: Analyzing a Photograph.  Recap the theme of change in land use through time.

Assign students to write a short summary statement that explains how the use of the land has changed between “Then” and “Now.” The conclusion should be based on features they observed in the photographs.

Inform students of your expectations according to key points in the Scoring Rubric.

Instruct students to refer to the lists they wrote when analyzing the Schweiter Vineyard and Hydraulic/Lincoln photographs.  They may also return to the images online for reference if they can navigate back and forth.

Share Your Conclusions

Create a bulletin board display entitled “Then and Now” with copies of the comparative photographs and a consensus of lists and conclusions.
