Finding a Favorite Photograph

Select the appropriate method for your class:

Data Projector with Internet access:

Locate the Student Activity Page and project on a screen.  Go to Step 3, “More Things To Do” and read “Finding a Favorite Photograph.” 

Students at Personal Computers:

Instruct students to locate the Student Activity Page on their personal computers.  Go to Step 3, “More Things To Do” and read “Finding a Favorite Photograph.” 

No Internet access:

Distribute printed copies of photographs that might be of interest to students.
Photocopies of a printed download may not show as many details as image on screen.

Guide students through the navigation of the Search page and design an exercise of your choice.

Guided search on web page:

1.   Click the large image to enter the website.
2.   Locate the Search box; place cursor in box.
3.   Type a keyword in box; press enter. All the photographs that contain your keyword in their metadata will appear.
4.   Scroll through photos to select a favorite image and discuss or write about it.

Suggested keywords for Fourth Grade students:  boat, dog, kitchen, girl, boy, baseball, streetcar, etc., and the date 1900.  These searches will reveal manageable lists of interesting photographs.   Students may use a keyword of their own choice, but advise them that a word such as car is not as appropriate as automobile. The word automobile will reveal 133 choices, which is a long list to scroll through.  Images will appear in chronological order, oldest first.

Optional: If you want to look at a "Now" view of the Street Scene photograph from Step 1, enter the keyword typewriter.
